Application Information*

To maintain the one-on-one ratio, enrollment is limited to between 70 and 80 qualified applicants with work in progress, people actively pursuing careers as authors and/or illustrators of books for young readers:

  • Developing professionals
  • Established professionals

The conference is of greatest benefit to those not already represented by an agent.

The conference fee is $195 and includes a continental breakfast and a buffet lunch. Check must accompany application and will be returned if you are not accepted. Make checks payable to: Rutgers University Council on Children's Literature. (See below for our cancellation and refund policy.) We have two scholarships available for promising authors or illustrators who might not otherwise be able to attend the conference. For details, click here.

Because of the overwhelming number of applicants in recent years, we have designated separate mailing addresses for each category. Send your application and a sample of your work (three pages of a manuscript for middle grade or young adult, a complete manuscript for the picture book category, or two to three pages of illustrations with or without a dummy) with a check made payable to the Rutgers University Council on Children's Literature to the individual responsible for your genre and category.* (See below.) Please submit your application to one category only

Format: Writing samples must be double-spaced in 12 point Times New Roman with one-inch margins on all sides.

Writing samples and illustrations must be unpublished
and not under contract.

Do not send applications as certified mail.

Refund Policy: We will refund the full amount of the application fee up to one month before the Conference. After that, applicants receive 50% of their fee. There is no refund for cancellations made forty-eight hours before the Conference.
